Day 7. Da Vinci

Today was the day when I decided to buy a few games, gift some to Anya, and try to play something besides HOTS.

So, the games I’ve bought were:

  1. V Rising

  2. Tower Dominion

  3. Decktamer

The games I’ve bought for Anya were:

  1. XCOM 2

  2. XCOM 2: War of the Chosen

Unluckily, it seems that Anya has a deep resentment towards playing Xcom games, since she tried the first one under duress, so she thinks she won’t like it again and doesn’t want to play. She said she will try XCOM 2 from my pc though, and if she likes it - fine, if not - she will decline my gifts and no harm done, although the games were really cheap on Steam sale. She won’t try it today, sometime later. I think it would be better to play through the first game first, but I take what I can get, I suppose.

As for my games I decided to try V Rising, since it was supposed to be about Vampires and building castles, and I though I might be able to recruit Anya to join me if the game is good. I tried it for half an hour, and unfortunately, the game was not good for me. I though it would be like a cool coop game, but turns out it’s more like a WoW. So, the fighting and castle building didn’t really charm me during my tryout, so I requested a refund. As for the other two games, I haven’t tried them yet, but I think I might like them anyway.

Apart from that, Anya wanted to play something new, and although I also did, it was REALLY hard to try something else, because HOTS was constantly on my mind, saying “You could’ve been spending your time having more fun with me, than trying out some new pointless games.” So, eventually we managed to narrow down our choices, and between “HOTS and a movie” or “House of Da Vinci”, I chose the latter.
Anya was to play the game, and I was to watch. I wanted that for a few reasons - ability to use my pc while she plays to close some unwanted Chrome tabs or something, and because I wanted to additionally test Anya’s new pc. We have a short window till “the deal is done”, and we’ll be out of the return window, so it would be better to check it out properly, and not only put it under “heavy load” of HOTS…
The game we tried wasn’t that GPU heavy, so not much stress on the graphics card, but it’s something. The game itself was not bad, some puzzles, etc. I’m not sure how I feel about puzzles right now, but it was watchable. I even did a bit after Anya left to make food, but must admit that my true intentions were to finish the game faster to check it off my backlog…
At this point I’m not sure how I feel about majority of games. Like sure, there are some that I enjoy/ed because the gameplay was so interesting. The games like HOTS, Slay the Spire, Inscryption, Darkest Dungeon, Northgard, Artisan TD, Starcraft 2, Meet Your Maker, etc. But all the others… I don’t even know! For some games I just want to “level up and get that ability/achievement”, etc. So, it feels like I’m more like tolerating the gameplay to get to the end of the game, and not really enjoying the process. And it’s even harder for me to figure out how I feel about particular games, since sometimes I can be just “not in the mood” for a particular game or genre. This idea is supported by a few situations, like happened with Northgard. I first tried the game and actually though it’s not my cup of tea, so I refunded it. And then, a year or two later, I decided to try it again (for no apparent reason), and I liked it a lot and put a lot of hours into it (more precisely - 233.5 hours).
So, with instances like that it’s really hard to figure out if I dislike some game or just have to try it again when my mood is more suitable. So, what do I do? While writing this I was thinking about it, and it came to me that I probably should try new games anyway, despite disliking most of the games I try nowadays. Why? Because it doesn’t matter what mood I’m not. If I like the game, I will play it and all will be fine. If I dislike a game that I would’ve liked later, I can just try it again in due time, when maybe I will be more attracted to the genre or that particular game. Surely, there is a risk that I will drop a game too early and not discover enough about it, and will think I won’t enjoy it later, but since it’s better than not playing anything new at all - it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

Also, I tried launching Hogwarts Legacy on Anya’s laptop, and it run on the highest settings with x4 Multi Frame Gen and full Raytracing with about 130 FPS, which is considerably much more than my pc can get on medium settings…
I guess 4k sounds good, but not too good when your GPU and CPU can’t handle the game properly. Well, at least my screen is bigger, I guess.

We watched a few movies today. First one was Sixth Sense - we managed to finish it, and the other one was Election (1999). We haven’t finished it yet, but hopefully will till the end of the day. I then can start watching other movies I have in my movie backlog - The Lovely Bones, etc. Btw, if you like watching movies, check out Showly app, it’s amazing for tracking your movies and series!

I guess tis all for today!
