The thing about change is that if we change because others request that of us, we never actually, we never truly change, but if we change because we feel that we have to change and we feel like there's no turning back for us anymore, that change sticks around forever and doesn't go away and it is thus permanent. And when the change is permanent so is the positive result which is the cause of it. So, the more you keep changing because of you and nobody else but you, the more positive results you keep on getting, and the more positive results you keep on getting, the more positive and the more past-free and the more pain-free is your life. The worst mistake you can make is to change upon somebody else's request, for that leads to nowhere but to the old patterns you've already had to live through before. But if you feel it, if you feel the change building inside of you and you truly want to make it happen, you truly want to change on your own, then that's the best decision you can ever make in your life. It's as complicated and yet as simple as this. For the change to become permanent the change has to come from you, nobody else but you, because as a rule nobody can truly change YOU but you. They can enter your life, provide you with leadership and guidance, give you an advice, pep talks when you're in need of them, offer you their assistance and help you grow as a person, but ultimately decision of change is a decision that can only come from you, because you are the only one who is responsible for you. It's true that friends push people ahead in their lives, but decision is solely yours, because they can not decide for you what you have to decide. Hope this helps a bit in your search.
