[IS CONCEPT-WEEK 07]
So previously, I mentioned that I want to become a Data Analyst. To get reference, I have been searching for some information regarding the career path of a Data Analyst. From the information that I get, Data Analysts not only need to just understand the data, but also be able to provide insight and analysis through clear visual, written and verbal communication. Data analysts are also divided in many kinds of field types working areas such as: Business intelligence, Data assurance, Data quality, Finance, Higher education, Marketing, and Sales.
To know more about data analysts, I contacted one of ITS IS (information System) alumni, Mas Wildan. He is an alumni of its 2016 graduates and currently working as a data analyst, specifically in the business intelligence (BI) sector in Shopee, which I think is very cool.
Based on the interview, he said that Working as a BI is much more related to data and data. They proceed and analyze data to provide insights or recommendations for the stakeholder/ business team. In addition BI also works on ad hoc reports or provides data needed by stakeholders/ users, and creates dashboard reports so we can see our business/ feature performance. There are some essential skills for a BI, which is SQL, basic programming / programming for data analytics (python or R), and statistics & data analysis. There must be pros and cons on every job, including for BI. For him the pro of working as BI is, he could work in the field that he is passionate about. And the cons are more about the working environment at an ecommerce / startup company. He said that they are flexible on the working time, so it makes him have to work for long hours. Lastly he gave me some advice to acknowledge/ to mastered the skill of :
1. Query / SQL / Database
2. Programming (Python or R)
3. Statistics / Data analysis
4. Data visualization
And things that he said I can prepared/do from now on are:
1. A portfolio, writings / articles / essays about data analysis, coding documentation, portfolio dashboard / report (data visualization)
2. Start looking for an internship / intern in the first semester
3.Participate in data analysis / data science / data mining competitions
The information that Mas Wildan gave is so insightful. He gave me really detailed information about the career I want to work on in the future (data analyst especially Business intelligence). That also makes me realize there are many things that I have to prepare from now on.
In addition I also asked my dad about what is all about and their expectations about me, thus I also did an interview with them to know about the outlook of my career path linked with their expectations. And My parents really support me in working on this career, that’s really gained my motivation to study even harder to reach my dreams.
[IS CONCEPT-WEEK 08]
After doing some searching and interviewing with an alumni, I am trying to set off my dream plan. My dream plan would be :
I will work hard and be focused on my studies. At the same time, to be involved as much as I could in Campus organization activities, Study exposures, and Internship to enrich my soft skill expertise and experiences. Targeted to graduate within the next 3 or 4 years from now on.
In the year of 5, I will use my knowledge, soft skill experience and expertise that I already obtained during my college studies and internship to apply into E-commerce or Start-up companies and maybe create ideas within IT related.
In the next following years, while continuing to work with, I also want to pursue my Master degree to get more knowledge and be able to achieve a good position in the company that I worked with.
